Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a technique used by physical therapists that involves the therapist using their hands to mobilize or manipulate joints and soft tissue. This can help control pain, increase joint range of motion, reduce soft tissue inflammation, induce relaxation, facilitate movement, and improve function.  Multiple techniques can be used to achieve this including joint mobilizations, manipulations, and soft tissue techniques.

  • Joint mobilizations are rhythmic oscillations or sustained pressure that is applied to a joint or joints.
  • Joint manipulation involves a skilled, quick movement applied to a specific joint.
  • Soft tissue techniques are applied to muscles, ligaments, and tendons to help relax muscles, ease pain in the soft tissue, and break up scar tissue.  This may include massage, trigger point therapy, etc.
