Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral to see a physiotherapist in BC?

This is a common question physiotherapists are asked.  In BC, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist.  Physiotherapists are considered primary health care professionals.  That means your physiotherapist is able to assess you to determine which treatment is the most appropriate for your current condition.  Physiotherapists are able to treat many conditions but in some cases they may refer you back to your family doctor or to emergency if needed.

There are some instances where a referral is required.  Some private insurance plans require a doctor’s referral for coverage and may only cover a certain amount of therapy per year (usually $500/year).  ICBC claims require a doctor’s referral for coverage.  If there are any questions, it is always best to check with your insurance provider, as there are different rules and regulations.
